Clwb Compostio is a Community Composting project in Carmarthenshire with the aim of reducing food waste, taking responsibility for our food waste, and turning it into a nutrient-dense, soil enhancing compost to restore ecosystems and create a bio-complete growing medium.

We are very grateful to have been awarded 1st Place in the Sustainable Start Up Award hosted by Carmarthen Enterprise Hub, meaning we were able to purchase a Ridan 200, an efficient hot composting system, which is located on our site in Felingwm Isaf.

With the Ridan, we are able to process the food waste of members of the community who are committed to sustainable, circular practices.

You can get involved in a variety of ways, from joining the Clwb, to volunteering, to attending training and workshops. If you join the Clwb, you are guaranteed to have compost returned. Alternatively, you can buy surplus compost when it becomes available.

We are also working on a county-wide worm farm.

Why should I join Clwb Compostio?

By joining Clwb Compostio, you are doing so much more than taking responsibility for your food waste. You are joining a growing network of eco-conscious people around Carmarthenshire and the rest of the UK who want to reduce travel miles, reduce land fill, and start making nutrient-rich, soil-healing compost.

By joining us, you know exactly what is happening to your food waste. It's kept within your county and kept within local production. We carefully curate your food waste, along with local brown waste, to produce the highest quality organic compost.  We put our love, care, and hands into every stage of the process to ensure you are receiving the best service and best compost possible.

Producing compost in this way sequesters carbon and reduces emissions which would otherwise be produced from alternative food waste management techniques.
The finished product is unique in that it contains a 'biologically-complete' living culture that feeds the soil. It is full of beneficial bacteria, fungi,  and billions of other microorganisms that heal depleted soils, retains more water, makes nutrients more readily available to your plants, reduces risk of diseases, and keeps that carbon where it belongs -IN THE GROUND!

But my food waste is already collected for free, why should I pay you?

We get it, and we've asked ourselves the same thing.

Your roadside food waste collections are currently driven to an anaerobic digester in Bridgend.  Anaerobic digesters are better for the environment than throwing your food waste in landfill, but they're also far from ideal as the process produces a lot polluting gasses such as methane and nitrous oxide.  It also produces a leachate bi-product which is being sold as agricultural fertiliser, but is difficult to find any evidence to suggest the benefits of this.

By joining the Clwb, your food waste is kept within Carmarthenshire, and you know exactly what's happening to it.  You can also choose to get it back in its transformed state, if you wish, bringing it back full circle and closing the loop on food waste!

Aerobically
composting your food waste does not produce the significant amount of polluting gasses that the anaerobic digester does, and it doesn't produce any wasteful biproducts.  The benefits of compost are explained in more detail below, but if you're looking at lowering your environmental impact, this is the way to go!

There are also perks to joining Clwb Compostio - one being that we replace your food bin every week with a clean one, meaning you don't need the hassle of cleaning your own! We only use soda crystals, lemon, water, and a drop of tea tree oil to clean our buckets, so you can rest assure that no nasty chemicals are going into the cleaning of your bin.  Read about our membership options below to find out about the other awesome things you get when you sign up.

What's so great about compost anyway?

We're so glad you asked!

We don't really make compost, nature does. We just give it the optimum conditions and nature does it's thing. During the composting process, billions of living microorganisms make their home in there. Each of these microorganisms have a really important job to do, such as making nutrients more available to the plants you grow in it, meaning you get healthier plants that are more resistant to diseases. There is an entire 'Soil Food Web' going on in there.  It's also why it's called a 'living soil'. Other benefits of living soil include weed suppression, robust root systems, balanced ecosystems, and increased disease resistance.

Compost can also retain a lot of water and carbon. Our soils are in crisis; compost helps to heal our soils by storing more water and sequestering carbon. By adding compost to your soil, you improve its ability to retain water and reduce it running off, whilst keeping the carbon locked in.

If you want to know more about composting, look out for future training and workshops.

How to use your compost

Our compost can be used in a variety of ways. Because of it's rich organic ingredients and our nurturing composting process, it's much more nutrient-dense than the stuff you buy in the shops, so bare that in mind when growing your veg!

As a soil conditioner

If your soil is in poor condition and isn't retaining moisture, spread our compost over your soils to improve its structure.

As a growing medium

Create your own potting mixes by combining our compost with horticultural sand.

As a mulch

Spread our compost over your veg beds, around newly planted trees and shrubs, or in planting holes to give plants and veg a super boost!

In compost tea

There are lots of recipes out there for making natural fertilisers, so why not get creative and use all those lovely nutrients in an even more concentrated form!
